Giving Money Away In the Name Of Corporate Social Responsibility

It seems every one is jumping on the bandwagon! CSR is the new “must do”; small and medium sized businesses are joining in; and, there is even a minister in charge of CSR!

Here at Platinum we do believe in responsibility and we certainly agree that organisations should consider the effect they are having on the communities within which they operate. However we also believe very strongly that charity begins at home and that you can usually kill two birds with one stone (do forgive the mixed metaphors).

Charity begins at home – Are your staff happy? Are they safe? Does working within your business still allow them to be contributing members of the community?
Numerous studies have shown that staff/team members that contribute to causes they believe in are not only nicer to work with – they actually are more creative and tend to bring new ideas with them to work. Add to this the boost to your company’s reputation because of the support they are providing in the community and you are killing three birds with one stone (paying once for the triple gains of improved productivity, creativity and reputation)

Instead of the traditional cash donations or sponsoring a bus, why not encourage your staff to work on local community projects on company time?

• Helping with reading classes in local primary school can teach the more aggressive manager a little more patience
• Contributing as an unpaid member on a charities board can provide that bright young manager with some of the wisdom required to take on even more
• The list goes on…
