Useful Information

  • Free Mediation Service: Do you employ less than 50 staff? Do you have a problem with a member of staff you think may escalate? If so, you can take advantage of a free mediation scheme offered by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS). Running until September 2004, the scheme offers business owners and their staff practical advice, information and help. To find out more go to: http://www.acas.org.uk/services/dispute_individuals_employer.html#8

  • Employment Handbook: A handbook providing information and advice to small businesses on employment issues has just been updated by ACAS. It is designed for business owners who have limited time and / or expertise to deal with employment matters. To see an online version of the handbook, go to: http://www.acas.co.uk/publications/H01.html

  • Road Safety: The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has recently launched a road safety training and advice pack for businesses. The guidance highlights you responsibilities if staff drive as part of their jobs. It also includes advice o how to plan routes sensibly. To access the TUC advice on road safety, go to: www.tuc.org.uk/extras/roadsafety.pdf

  • New Procedures for Staff Dismissal: A 13-step dismissal procedure will be introduced in October and must be followed whenever employment is terminated. If you fail to observe the rules you could face a tribunal and fines of up to £55,000. Many employers’ organisations claim the rules are overly complex and have been poorly communicated to businesses. However, the DTI insists the rules will make it easier for small companies to develop a formal disciplinary procedure and stay within the law. For DTI guidance for employers on dismissal, go to: http://www.dti.gov.uk/er/individual/fair-pl714.htm

  • Best Practice Reports: Benchmarking and best practice reviews are a fantastic way to improve your business performance. The DTI has now launched a website that provides the tools and information you need to get started. This website contains case studies, free brochures, reports and a range of self-assessment tools, to help you improve every aspect of your business.

  • Ignoring new marketing call laws could cost you £5000! Does your company employ business-to-business marketing calls? Then you will be affected by new regulations that become law in June 2004 and run the risk of substantial fines. For the first time, businesses will be able to prevent unwanted marketing calls by registering with the corporate Telephone Preference Service (TPS). Extending the right to opt-out of cold calls to businesses as well as individuals – this is the latest stage of the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations that are being rolled out gradually since December 2003. Failure to comply could see companies found in breach of the new law and fined up to £5,000. For further information:- http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
