Strategy Review and Implementation

Large businesses typically employ departments to work on “corporate strategy” and plan the future of the business – which markets to enter, which products to develop, budget implications, staffing implications, competitor responses, etc.

For many of our medium sized clients however, life is a little different. Usually, in spite of all best intentions, “business-as-usual” keeps getting in the way of taking that long hard look at the strategic future of the business. And even when (if) you get round to doing this, the same problem is faced when trying to implement changes.

Our strategy clients typically fall into several categories:

  1. A new product is being considered and we are called in to help with the marketing – however on further conversation with the team, it is determined that commercialising the product will have significant implications for the core business going forward – in terms of the market served, financial resources, etc.
  2. The team have not managed to stop and think about the future of the business for quite a while and need to take stock – typically by the time we are called to this type of client, sales and/or profits are in decline.
  3. The management team have had the “away day” and know what changes make sense – however adding responsibility for implementation to the team’s normal day-to-day activities seems downright cruel in light of the workload they currently carry

We work with boards and management teams to define growth and survival strategies that take account of changes in the economic, social and technical environment. Our approach would typically include:

  • PEST Analysis – what are the outside influences that will shape the environment within which you must compete?
  • Facilitated Visioning Sessions – Given the external forces at play, what is the vision for the business in three-five years time? We will provide the challenge, objectivity and rigour required in these sessions; however the vision will be yours (it is your business!)
  • Balanced Scorecard Review – what are your current strengths and weaknesses and how great is that gap between where you are now and where you will need to be?
  • Activity and Resource Planning – What are the most important gaps that need immediate attention? What resources are available to make the required changes?
  • Implementation – Should you decide you need extra hands to make things happen sooner rather than later, we will roll up our sleeves and muck in!
